Cajari Carbon - Community and Agroextractivism of Brazil Nuts in RESEX-CA

Description

The project is proposed by the Association of Agroextractive Workers of the Cajari Reserve (ASTEX-CA) for implementation over 24 months, with the following partner institutions: the Association of Women of Alto Cajari (AMAC), the Mixed Cooperative of Agroextractive Workers of Alto Cajari (COOPERALCA), Embrapa Amapá, the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), the Maracá Agroextractive Family School (EFAEX-MA), the Carvão Agroextractive Family School (EFAC), and the National Council of Traditional Populations (CNS). Its overall objective is to work with traditional local communities in the Rio Cajari RESEX, in southern Amapá, on carbon sequestration and emissions avoided through the conservation of forests and biodiversity associated with the Amazon biome, contributing to the fight against global warming and climate change. The fight against greenhouse gases will take place through the expansion of natural chestnut tree populations, environmental education, investment in the Brazil nut production chain to strengthen extractivism, and the conservation of forests and biodiversity associated with the Amazon biome. Its specific objectives are: 1) Mapping of chestnut trees to quantify production and the potential for avoided emissions; 2) Carbon fixation through the expansion of the chestnut tree population in cleared areas; 3) Improving infrastructure and processes for collection, storage, processing, and transportation of production; 4) Environmental, productive, and managerial training; and 5) Support for project administration, management of associations and cooperatives, and implementation of communication and dissemination infrastructure for the adoption of sustainable practices.
